Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar are well-known mini vacation spots in Maharashtra. But quite frankly, a lot of people are bored of them now. They’re also ideal to visit only when you have a bunch of days at hand so that you can explore them well. Here, we’ve compiled a list of not-so-heard-of getaway spots that can be enjoyed in a day. Moreover, a lot of the population doesn’t know about these places, so it is also the ideal spot to get away from people and bask in solitude.

  1. Karjat

62 km away from Mumbai, it is easy to reach here as there is a train to Karjat station. It is a good place to explore for the adventurers who like trekking and visiting forts. There are activities like rappelling, rock climbing, white water rafting and boating. The trails here are a true challenge.

  1. Murud-Janjira

Located 148 km from Mumbai, Murud-Janjira is a tiny place in Raigad district which boasts of historical importance. There’s a fort located in the middle of the sea which is said to have never been conquered because of its unique architecture. The beach here is clean and pristine.

  1. Matheran

Matheran is located 83 km from Mumbai and can be reached via the Neral-Matheran toy train. It has several activities like horse-riding and trekking. There are dams that you can visit and even bathe in. it is like a cute little haven away from the hustle and bustle of cities.

  1. Kamshet

Known for its paragliding service, people from near and far go to Kamshet for paragliding. It is situated 105 km away from Mumbai and some 16 km away if you’re already in Lonavala Khandala. Although the paragliding is unmissable, it is famous for other sport adventures as well. 

  1. Raigad

If you’re a history buff who loves exploring new caves and forts, Raigad is the place for you. Known for being the ruling place of Shivaji Maharaj when he was around, this place has all references linked to him. You can choose to take either the stairs or the joyous cable car ride.

  1. Karnala Bird Sanctuary

For those who love the wild, Karnala Bird Sanctuary can be found 60 km from Mumbai. A charming picnic spot nestled in the Sahyadri ranges, it is home to around 150 resident birds and 37 types of migrant ones. The accompanying gardens make it the perfect picnic spot.

  1. Igatpuri

Igatpuri is 120 km from Mumbai and has the calmest, most serene atmosphere. It is not for the adventurers, rather it is for those who like long romantic walks and a surreal weather. Retreat to this getaway for some peace and quiet.

  1. Maval

If you want to go night-camping under the stars, this is the place to go. Maval is located 73 km from Mumbai and also offers fun water sports like kayaking and rafting. Relatively underrated for camping, discover Maval before the mainstream crowd does.

  1. Savarkut Village

This place 130 km away from Mumbai offers an experience to those who miss their village. It has activities like hiking and white-water rafting, but what it is ideal for is the rural experience. Situated on the banks of river Vaitarna, it is a scenery straight out of a picture book.

  1. Chiplun

258 km away from Mumbai, Chiplun is a proper little village in Maharashtra. It is best known for its sand beaches and picturesque scenes. You will find many cashew and mango groves here along with temples and a waterfall.
