Search engine giant Google has started public testing of generative artificial intelligence (AI) features in Gmail and Docs.

Now enrolled iOS and Android testers will get a chance to try out the ‘Help you write’ feature in Gmail as Google begins rolling Workspace Labs out to a large number of beta testers. Users who have enrolled in the Workspace Labs program will see the AI ‘Help you write’ tool.

As the name suggests, the feature – which was first announced at Google’s I/O 2023 event in May – lets users draft emails using prompts.

The beta testers composing emails on their phones will get an introductory prompt for the generative AI, according to 9to5Google. Then, the ‘Help me write‘ button will pop up at the bottom-right corner. Tap on it, enter your prompt, push the ‘Create’ tab and see the magic.

The generative AI will give an option to ‘Insert’ or ‘Replace’ the suggested text. Users will get a ‘Refine’ option to Formalize, Elaborate, Shorten, I’m Feeling Lucky, and Write A Draft too.

While Formalize helps make the draft sound more formal, the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ tab helps users with creative details to the mail. Google will leave square brackets in the draft for places where you need to add your name.Recently, Google also made the ‘paginated mode’ default on Docs for Android devices.”Documents will now be in paginated mode upon first opening unless the document is set to pageless. This will set up your Google Doc with pages and page breaks in the app, enabling a more cohesive visual design between web and mobile,” the company said in a Workspace Updates blog post.

Earlier this month, the company started rolling out a new feature in Gmail for mobile phones which will provide users with the most relevant search results, allowing them to find specific emails or files more quickly and easily.

In April this year, Google announced a new feature that allows users to add emoji reactions to comments within Docs. This feature allows users to leave emojis on Google Docs comments by tapping a new button in the bottom-right corner of the window.
