Wipro reportedly sent a termination letter to impacted employees which stated that employees are liable to pay Rs 75000 that the firm spent on training them.
By Sneha Saha: Layoffs are giving sleepless nights to corporate employees. Last week, two top tech companies in the world – Google and Microsoft – announced massive layoffs. Google CEO Sundar Pichai fired 12000 employees while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella laid off 10000 employees globally. Now, one of India’s top IT companies, Wipro, has announced layoffs as well.
According to reports, Wipro has terminated hundreds of fresher employees over poor performance. The company, reports suggest, recently conducted an internal performance evaluation and employees who scored lowest are asked to leave. As per reports, the company was expected to fire 800 employees but Wipro said the number is lesser than that. “We had to let go of 452 freshers after they performed poorly in assessments repeatedly even after training,” Wipro told Business Today.
Commenting on the layoffs, the IT company said, “At Wipro, we take pride in holding ourselves to the highest standards. In line with the standards we aim to set for ourselves, we expect every entry-level employee to have a certain level of proficiency in their designated area of work. The evaluation process includes assessments to align employees with the business objectives of the organization and the requirements of our clients. This systematic and comprehensive performance evaluation process triggers a series of actions such as mentoring and retraining and in some cases separation of certain employees from the company.”
Wipro reportedly sent a termination letter to impacted employees which stated that employees are liable to pay Rs 75000 that the firm spent on training them. However, Wipro noted in the same mail that the company has waived off the amount. “We wish to inform you that training cost of Rs 75,000 which you are liable to pay, will be waived off,” the termination letter noted. Speaking to the publication, a fresher who was terminated due to poor performance said, “I had got an offer letter in January 2022, but after months of delay they onboarded me. And now they are firing me giving the excuse of the test?”
The tech industry is going through a rough time. Last week, the two biggest tech companies , Google and Microsoft, laid off 22000 employees globally. Both Google CEO and Microsoft CEO took full responsibility of the layoffs and hinted that the companies overhired in the last few years. Before Microsoft and Google, tech companies like Amazon, Netflix, Salesforce and many others have laid off hundreds and thousands of employees stating macro economic conditions.
