As per recent reports, WhatsApp is working on rolling out a new feature called ‘Channels’ which will act like a new one-to-many tool to help users broadcast information on iOS. According to WABetaInfo, the social networking giant is currently working on a new update which will bring this feature for WhatsApp beta users on Android, iOS and Desktop devices.
The upcoming feature ‘Channels’ will help turn WhatsApp into a platform which is more than just a platform for one-on-one communications and is more open to broader communications. The feature will function in a similar manner as the tool available on Instagram.
What Are Channels?
The ‘Channels’ feature which is being rolled out by WhatsApp is basically a broadcasting tool and can be formed on several varieties of topics. WhatsApp users can subscribe to any particular channel on the platform as per their interest.
However, messages sent on a Channel will not be end-to-end encrypted as the feature will act as a public tool.
The report further reveals that ‘Channels’ feature will work in a similar manner as the ones present on Meta-owned Instagram. So we can expect the messages sent on Channels to be restricted to only admins and people they invite on WhatsApp.
A WhatsApp channel is a private tool in which phone numbers and user information are always kept private.
The channels feature will also accept handles, allowing users to find a certain WhatsApp channel by just typing their username into WhatsApp.
This upcoming WhatsApp feature is intended to increase channel accessibility, making it easier for users to receive updates that they like. The ‘Channels’ feature is currently under development and they will be released in a future update of the app, the report further added.
