The five-member committee under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd) Ranjana Desai was formed by the Uttarakhand government on May 27, 2022. The committee was entrusted with the task of examining the issues related to the UCC and further implementation of the same. The deadline to submit its report is June 30. However, with the work still going on, the committee will miss the deadline and will be given an extension.
“We have done a lot of work, but I can’t promise that we will submit on June 30,” Desai told ET. “We have completed the public consultation and their suggestions have been incorporated in a consultation report. Now we are collating the ideas of individual members of the committee. Meetings are going on.”
Uttarakhand CM had told ET in April that the draft report of the committee is ready and the final report will be submitted in two months. Talking about the coalition of thoughts from the stakeholders, Desai added the committee has worked hard to collect and incorporate views from everyone.
The panel members were in Delhi to meet the Law Commission officials on Friday.
