But there was absolute silence on the topic, while Apple did unveil its one of the biggest products in seven years, the mixed-reality headset called Vision Pro.
Though Cook avoided the mention of AI or steered clear of the subject, the 62-year-old spoke about artificial intelligence at a recent interview with ‘Good Morning America’.
The CEO pointed out that Apple at present integrates AI into its products, but when people think of artificial intelligence, they are talking about large language models.
“We do integrate it into our products today. People don’t necessarily think about it as AI, what people are now talking about are these large language models and I think they have great promise. I do think that it’s so important to be very deliberate and very thoughtful in the development and the deployment of these,” Cook said.
Ever since OpenAI launched ChatGPT, now backed by Microsoft, there has been a lot of noise and debate over the future of AI and how it is going to impact humankind. Many people, including top leaders, have concerns. Insisting that such large language models are deployed after a lot of thought, Cook agreed that “they can be so powerful that you worry about things like bias, things like misinformation. Maybe worse in some cases.”Many business and tech leaders, including Tesla and Twitter chief Elon Musk, have been ringing an alarm against AI, with some even fearing mankind extinction.
“Regulation is something that’s needed in space. I think guard rails are needed and if you look down the road, it’s so powerful that companies have to employ their own ethical decisions. Regulations will have a difficult time staying even with the progress on this because it’s moving so quickly and so I think it’s incumbent on companies as well to regulate themselves,” Cook said, but the Apple chief also made an interesting revelation. He shared that he uses ChatGPT, which is an artificial intelligence chatbot that allows human-like conversations and more. The app is also available on iOS devices.
During the conversation, Cook shared that Apple is in fact looking closely at it.
“Oh, of course I use it. Yeah, I’m excited about it. I think there’s some unique applications for it and you can bet that it’s something that we’re looking at closely,”
