Thinking of switching to Mastodon, a microblogging site, that’s emerging as a rival to Elon Musk-headed Twitter? Here is a quick guide on how to set up new Mastodon account on iOS, and Android phones.
By Divya Bhati: The social media space is currently juggling between tweets and toots. While Elon Musk is rejoicing at the all-time high of active users on Twitter, many users who are all overwhelmed with the current chaos and confusion on Twitter are looking for an alternative to the bird app. Among all other options, Mastodon is one that has gained widespread notice.
Mastodon is an open-source microblogging site that is similar to discord. The platform offers ad-free decentralized space to share thoughts in dedicated community servers. One can join, create servers, post “toots” (instead of tweets), follow other people and organizations, and favorite (like) and boost (retweet) posts of others. It is said to be simpler and safer compared to other social media websites.
But what exactly servers are and how to set up your new account on Mastodon? Let’s take a look at the step-by-step process of setting up your profile at Mastodon.
How to set up an account on Mastodon
The process of creating an account is simple and similar in both Android and iOS. You will just need to provide a username, email address, and password and click on the check the box to agree with the terms of service and server rules.
Step 1: Download Mastodon on Play Store or App Store.
Step 2: Now open the app and click on Get Started to create your new account.
Step 3: Mastodon will show you some available servers on the platform. You can select the servers you want to get started with. The Servers are based on a variety of people’s interests including general news and more.
Step 4: After selecting servers tap on next.
Step 5: You will be shown some ground rules of the platform. Read and click Next.
Step 6: Add your profile details including name, profile id for Mastodon, email, and profile password.
Step 7: Mastodon will send a verification link on your mentioned email id. Go to your email and click on that.
Note: It might take a few minutes for the platform to send the link. Also, check your spam folder and sometimes the verification mail shows up there.
Step 8: After the email is verified you will be landed on the home page of Mastodon. You can now check the posts from people in your selected servers.
Notably, Mastodon is Fediverse- interconnecting various servers that users can choose, create or even leave. You can join multiple servers and switch instances at any time. Most of the Mastodon servers are open for registration and will only ask for your email address and a password to connect.
