West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of trying to bring down her government in West Bengal. Shah had said at a public rally in Birbhum on Friday that the Trinamool government will be ousted in 2025, before the completion of its term, if BJP gets 35 seats in coming Lok Sabha polls. She also gave a clarion call for uniting the opposition and claimed if the opposition parties come together, BJP will not be able to come to power in 2024.

“Taking oath as Home Minister, Shah cannot say that an elected government will be brought down. That means, a Home Minister is conspiring against the state instead of protecting the country and Constitution,” Banerjee emphasized.

“The Home Minister is saying that he will bring down an elected government. He has no right to say this. He has no right to be a Home Minister. We demand his resignation,” Banerjee said. She also added that BJP will not even win five seats in West Bengal in 2024.

Banerjee slammed the BJP for Howrah and Rishra violence on Ram Navami and blamed the Centre for the non-disbursal of funds in MGNREGA.

On Atiq killing
She slammed the UP government and raised concern about the killing of Atiq Ahmed and his brother in Uttar Pradesh and questioned how many Central teams have visited Uttar Pradesh after the incident, adding 151 Central teams have visited West Bengal. “Whatever was seen in Uttar Pradesh is disturbing. It reflects double-engine BJP’s double standard”, Banerjee said.

On NRC, CAA

Banerjee also said that she will not allow CAA and NRC in Bengal. While referring to a recent letter sent by the central government, regarding updation and removal of illegal Aadhar cards in certain districts of Bengal, the Chief Minister said the letter refers to areas in North and South 24 Parganas. “It is known who resides in these areas,” the Chief Minister said, hinting that these districts are dominated by ‘minorities’.
Banerjee said the Centre is trying to implement The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 under the garb of illegal Adhar Card removal related work. “All are citizens of Bengal. We will not allow NRC or CAA to be implemented in Bengal,” Banerjee iterated.

On Arvind Kejriwal
Speaking about Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Delhi excise policy case, Banerjee said that Centre is trying to make it clear that it will not spare the Chief Minister.
