British coffee and sandwich chain Pret A Manger opened its first shop in the country’s financial hub Mumbai on Friday, as part of its franchise agreement with Reliance Brands to launch in India. The forty-year old brand is expected to open 10 stores in the first year of the partnership and take that up to 100 Pret A Manger stores over the next five years.
“We have been working closely with the RBL team to create an offer for Indian consumers that reflects the Pret brand, while also adapting to local preferences and food habits. Coming to India has been a goal of ours for a long time, and the opening of our first shop in Mumbai is a landmark moment in our international expansion plans,” Pano Christou, CEO of Pret A Manger, said in a statement. Rival Starbucks‘ positioning in India is premium compared to its rivals Cafe Coffee Day and McCafe that have significantly lower prices.
