Gujarat Assembly Polls: Congress comes out with second list of candidates in Gujarat

The Congress, late on Thursday, released its second list of 46 candidates for the upcoming Gujarat polls. The list, a mix of experienced and youth, included names of 21 sitting MLAs and 18 new faces. Sitting MLAs Punja Vansh (Una) and Puna Gamit (Vyara), whose names appeared in the second list have already filed their nominations on Thursday, even before the party went public. A federal judge in Texas on Thursday ruled that President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt was unconstitutional and must be vacated, delivering a victory to conservative opponents of the program. The U.S. will send $400 million more in military aid to Ukraine, U.S. officials announced Thursday, amid concerns that financial assistance for the war against Russia could decline a bit if Republicans take control of Congress. The aid comes as the vote counting from Tuesday’s election continues, with Republicans inching closer to a narrow House majority and with control of the Senate hinging on tight races in Arizona, Nevada and Georgia. According to the Pentagon, the aid package will contain large amounts of ammunition and, for the first time, four highly mobile Avenger air defense systems. Qantas Airways launches sustainable aviation fuel program with 5 Australian companies

Qantas Airways Ltd said on Friday it has launched a coalition program with five Australian companies, including oil and gas major Woodside Energy, for procurement of sustainable aviation fuel aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Under the program, members will pay for the incremental cost of buying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), starting with up to 10 million litres sourced by Qantas, and then upping it to 20 million litres each year from 2025.

Global CO2 emissions to hit an all-time high in 2022, climate goals at risk

Global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels are on track to rise around 1% this year, scientists said on Friday, warning this would make it harder for the world to avoid disastrous levels of climate change. Released during the United Nations COP27 climate summit, the Global Carbon Budget report laid bare the gap between the promises governments, companies and investors have made to cut planet-warming emissions in future years, and their actions today – which cause emissions to keep rising. Countries are expected to emit a total 41 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2022, said the report by more than 100 scientists, with 37 billion tonnes from burning fossil fuels and 4 billion tonnes from uses of land like deforestation. This year’s increase was driven by higher oil use in transport – paticularly aviation – as economies continued to reopen from lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
