Microsoft wants ChatGPT to control robots. But can AI chatbot think beyond text?

Remember ‘The Terminator’? The film is about a hostile artificial intelligence in a post-apocalyptic future. The film was released in 1984.

Back to reality and now, Microsoft is currently working on ways for AI chatbots to take control of robots. “Our goal with this research is to see if ChatGPT can think beyond text, and reason about the physical world to help with robotics tasks. We want to help people interact with robots more easily, without needing to learn complex programming languages or details about robotic systems,” Microsoft said.

The idea behind exploring ways for ChatGPT to take control of robots is to make life of humans easier. Robots already pretty much run our world. Be it the mechanised arms building products to the vacuum cleaner at home. But when it comes to having the robot do something new and out of its original job, you need an engineer with advanced technical knowledge to write code and run multiple tests.

To make things easier and possible, Microsoft is teaching ChatGPT how to solve problems considering the laws of physics, the context of the operating environment and how the robot’s physical actions can change the state of the world.

If Microsoft’s plans of ChatGPT taking control of robots gets through, then humans will be able to communicate with robots directly and give them commands in simple English.
