Owned by Indian business tycoon Sanjeev Goenka, the IPL franchise representing Lucknow city scored 257 with the loss of 5 wickets in 20 overs at Punjab Kings’ home ground in Mohali.
The highest score scored by a team in IPL is 263, scored by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. Lucknow Super Giants’ 257 runs is now ahead of 248, scored by RCB in 2016 and 246 scored by Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings way back in 2010.
While piling the second highest total by a team in an IPL innings, Lucknow hit 14 sixers in total and 27 boundaries.
Lucknow had lost its first wicket at just 41 runs, when its captain KL Rahul was dismissed for 12 runs from 9 balls. Shahrukh Khan took a catch from Kagiso Rabada’s delivery to dismiss KL Rahul.
However, Kyle Mayers, Ayush Badoni and Marcus Stoinis then took charge, smashing boundaries with ease.
Mayers scored a quickfire 54 from 24 deliveries, hitting 7 boundaries and 4 big sixers. Mayers was also dismissed by Rabada, caught by Shikhar Dhawan.Badoni and Australian allrounder Stoinis scored 43 and 72 from 24 and 40 deliveries, respectively. Stoinis hit 5 sixers and 6 boundaries.
When Badoni got caught out from Liam Livingstone’s delivery, West Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran came to the crease. He scored 45 from 19 deliveries, at a strike rate of 236.84.
Indian allrounders Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya were next to come the crease and they scored 11 and 5 from 6 and 2 deliveries.
Livingstone was the most expensive bowler, conceding 19 runs in one over. He was followed by Zimbabwe’s allrounder Sikander Raza, who rose to prominence from ICC T20 World Cup, conceding 17 runs from an over and went wicketless.
While Rabada picked two wickets, the batsmen also hit 5 sixes. Indian bowling sensation Arshdeep Singh also proved to be costly as his four overs went for 54 runs, including 10 boundaries.
