The officials from Defence, district administration and villagers on Thursday paid tributes to India’s first Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat and 13 others from armed forces, who lost their lives in the military helicopter crash at Nanjappanchatram near Coonoor in Nilgiris district on this day last year. Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Commandant Lt Gen Virendra Vats along with senior officials arrived at the spot and laid wreath and flowers at the site where the chopper crashed. Nilgiris district Collector S P Amrith and Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat also paid tributes to the departed souls.

South Korea’s parliament voted down on Thursday a revision bill intended to sharply increase the ceiling of bond issuance by state-run Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO), which has been struggling under mounting losses. The draft bill would have allowed KEPCO to issue bonds worth up to five times the sum of its equity capital and reserves, compared with two times at present, as it has been hard-hit by the surging costs of fuel it purchases to produce electricity. KEPCO posted a net loss of 16.65 trillion won ($12.63 billion) for the first nine months of this year, a huge increase from a 1.58 trillion won loss for the comparable period of 2021 mostly due to soaring energy prices globally.

Japan’s economy shrank less in July-Sept, revised data show

Japan’s economy contracted less than previously thought in the last quarter, weathering the country’s latest big COVID wave with less damage than had been thought.The Cabinet Office reported Thursday that the economy shrank at a 0.8 per cent annual rate in July-September. That was better than minus 1.2 per cent annual growth reported earlier. In quarterly terms, the world’s third-largest economy contracted 0.2 per cent instead of 0.3 per cent.

Iran hanged a man on Thursday convicted of wounding a paramilitary force member, the judiciary said, the first known execution it has carried out over nearly three months of protests. “Mohsen Shekari, a rioter who blocked Sattar Khan Street in Tehran on September 25 and wounded one of the security guards with a machete, was executed this morning,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said. Demonstrations have swept Iran for nearly three months since Amini died after her arrest by the notorious morality police in Tehran for an alleged breach of the country’s strict hijab dress code for women.

The margin loans are one of the options that the Morgan Stanley-led bank group and Musk’s advisers have discussed to ease the $13 billion debt Twitter took on as part of Musk’s $44 billion deal, the report said, citing people with knowledge of the matter. The discussions have so far centered around replacing the $3 billion of unsecured debt on which Twitter pays an interest rate of 11.75%, the maximum banks had agreed to finance the acquisition in April, the Bloomberg report said.

Hong Kong to loosen some COVID curbs including quarantine period for confirmed cases

Hong Kong authorities will shorten the quarantine period for confirmed COVID-19 cases and close contacts from seven to five days, public broadcaster RTHK reported on Thursday. A requirement for arrivals to Hong Kong to undergo daily rapid antigen (RAT) tests would also be reduced from seven to five days, RTHK added. The move comes after Chinese authorities on Wednesday announced the most sweeping changes to the nation’s stringent COVID control measures since the pandemic began three years ago.
