Last week, the BBC dropped a documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” which created quite a stir. Multiple reports revealed that the government of India had blocked YouTube videos which shared the documentary. Further, tweets that shared the video were also removed by Twitter on the government’s orders. Twitter users who had shared the links did say that the video was indeed taken down from their tweets. The tweet remained visible.
A senior advisor with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had confirmed the government of India’s move. “Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has issued directions for blocking multiple @YouTube videos of first episode of@BBCWorld ’s hateful propaganda “India: The Modi Question”. Orders were also issued to@Twitter for blocking over 50 tweets with links to these YT videos,” tweeted Kanthan Gupta, a senior advisor with the ministry.

Now, Twitter CEO and owner Elon Musk has had his say on the matter. Musk was asked whether Twitter had removed the links. A Twitter user asked Musk that “Twitter seems to have gone from “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach” to outright censorship in no time at all.”
To this tweet, Musk replied that he was hearing about the issue for the first time. “First I’ve heard,” he said in a tweet about the issue. He further said that he can’t “fix” everything about Twitter. “It is not possible for me to fix every aspect of Twitter worldwide overnight, while still running Tesla and SpaceX, among other things,” he added in the tweet.
According to a report by ANI, “UK’s National broadcaster British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) aired a two-part series attacking PM Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister during the Gujarat riots of 2002.”
The second episode of the documentary was aired earlier this week.
