So when Musk took a dig at WhatsApp and questioned its trust factor, it didn’t come as a surprise.
Retweeting a post by Twitter engineer on the microblogging platform where the user shared a screenshot of WhatsApp using its microphone in the background while the person was asleep.
“WhatsApp has been using the microphone in the background, while I was asleep and since I woke up at 6AM (and that’s just a part of the timeline!) What’s going on?” the person tweeted, to which Musk replied “WhatsApp cannot be trusted.”

Next day, Musk announced on the microblogging platform that Twitter is finally allowing users to send a DM reply to any message in the thread and use any emoji to react.
Apart from this, the Twitter CEO informed that soon the social networking platform will allow encrypted direct messages.
“With latest version of app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just most recent) and use any emoji reaction.
Release of encrypted DMs V1.0 should happen tomorrow. This will grow in sophistication rapidly. The acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head,” the 51-year-old billionaire tweeted on Wednesday.
The SpaceX boss further revealed that Twitter is also soon rolling out voice and video chat options for handles on the platform which will allow users to make calls anywhere in the world without giving up their phone numbers.
“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” Musk tweeted.
The call feature on Twitter will bring the micro-blogging platform in the same list that consists Meta’s social media applications, Facebook and Instagram, which have similar features on the platform. Meanwhile, Twitter this week said it will start a cleansing process by removing and archiving accounts that have been inactive for several years.
