ED raids part of BJP-led centre’s vendetta politics, says Congress

The Congress leadership and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel on Monday alleged political vendetta behind the ED raids on the premises linked to many Chhattisgarh Congress leaders, and claimed the their timing was aimed at clouding the AICC plenary session in Raipur this weekend.

“Whenever Congress takes any major step, such acts by central agencies happen. BJP was nervous when Congress took out the Bharat Jodo Yatra and now they are afraid of the plenary session going to be held in Raipur,” Baghel said at a press conference he held at Raipur along with AICC in-charge, Kumari Selja. “Our spirits cannot be broken by stopping our colleagues, engaged in preparations for the AICC plenary session, through such acts. BJP is worried over the success of Bharat Jodo Yatra and about Adani getting exposed…We will fight and win,” he said.

“These oppressive policies make it evident that the Modi-led Centre is so afraid of the Opposition, particularly the Congress,” said Selja. “They are not allowing the Opposition to raise their voice, not only in Parliament but even outside.”

At an AICC presser, spokesman Pawan Khera quoted some data to argue that the ED raids on Opposition leaders have gone up massively since the Modi government assumed office. He said while “ED carried out 112 raids” during the 2004-14 UPA regime, “ED conducted 3,010 raids in the past eight years”, with 95% of them being on the Opposition. “If we start from 2014, ED raided different Congress leaders 24 times — it raided TMC 19 times, NCP 11, Shiv Sena 8, DMK 6, RJD 5, BSP 5, TDP 5, INLD 3, YSRP 3, CPI-M 2, NC 2, PDP 2, AIADMK and MNS once each.”

AICC communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said the raids will only work as “booster shots” for Congress’ fight back. “This is clearly the politics of vendetta, politics of vengeance, politics of harassment and this is supposed to be a curtain raiser for the 85th Plenary of Congress. We are not afraid, we have nothing to hide. We will not be intimidated. I have repeatedly said — Mr. Modi’s policy of FDI is — ‘fear, deceit and intimidation’. This is his real FDI policy.”

He said the plenary resolution will also highlight the “misuse of the investigating agencies” by the Centre.
