Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Dhami said on Tuesday that the draft proposal for the implementation of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is ready and the state government will come up with a final report in the next two months.

This was one of Dhami’s promises in the run-up to the 2022 assembly election, which saw an incumbent government retaining power for the first time in Uttarakhand. In May last year, the government formed a five-member committee led by former Supreme Court judge (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai to prepare a draft proposal for implementation of UCC in the state.

“We were the first state to announce UCC and other states are following us. We have also enacted strong anti-conversion laws and some states are asking for details,” Dhami told ET.

Dhami was in Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He met the PM and demanded a rehabilitation package of Rs 3,000 crore for the Joshimath crisis. “This is the initial estimate. The disaster management department is preparing a report and this figure could change,” he said. “Currently there are around 1,000 families who need to be shifted to a new place.”

Uttarakhand has provided Rs 1,000 crore in the current budget for compensation to the affected families.

The state government disaster management department is also conducting a study in all cities in the state to see whether the current population is more or less than what the cities can bear. “This will help us prevent any Joshimath-like crisis in future. We have also sent a proposal for a disaster management institution in the state to study and react to the natural calamities on time and save human lives,” said Dhami.
