Four big cranes and around 4,00 manual resources have been deployed in the dismantling process of the Carnac Road Over Bridge, Mumbai. A 27-hour-long mega block was imposed by the Central Railway on the line for the dismantling of the 150-year-old bridge. The 150-year-old bridge is located between the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid Bunder on the suburban line in Mumbai.

China, US officials to attend Southeast Asia defense meeting

The defense chiefs of rival powers China and the US will both attend next week’s expanded meeting of Southeast Asian security ministers in Cambodia, opening up the possibility the two will hold face-to-face discussions. China’s Defense Ministry said Gen. Wei Fenghe will attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Defense Ministers’ Meeting-Plus from Sunday to Thursday. The Department of Defense said Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III will also attend following stops in Canada and Indonesia. Both officials plan to meet with participants on the margins of the main gathering of ministers from the 10-nation organization known as ASEAN.

EU ‘disappointed’ with UN climate deal on emissions

The European Union said Sunday that it was “disappointed” with a lack of ambition on reducing emissions in the climate deal agreed at the COP27 summit. “What we have in front of us is not enough of a step forward for people and planet. It doesn’t bring enough added efforts from major emitters to increase and accelerate their emission cuts,” European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans told the closing session of the two-week summit.

Student killed in shooting at US university campus

A student was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a university in Albuquerque, the largest city in the US state of New Mexico, said authorities. The incident took place on Saturday at the University of New Mexico (UNM), reports Xinhua news agency. The 19-year-old casualty was a UNM student and the 21-year-old injured is a basketball player of the New Mexico State University (NMSU), said local media. The shooting happened near Alvarado Hall, a student dormitory on its main campus, according to the UNM.

New Zealand said on Sunday Defence Minister Peeni Henare has visited Kyiv to reaffirm the Pacific nation’s support for Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion. “We discussed New Zealand’s recent extension of the infantry training support mission in the UK for Ukrainian troops out to July 2023,” Henare said in a statement after holding bilateral talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Oleksii Reznikov. “Visiting Kyiv sends a strong message that … our support for the Ukrainian defensive effort against Russia’s illegal invasion is unwavering.”

Explosion in Mangaluru auto an ‘act of terror’: Karnataka DGP

The explosion in a moving autorickshaw in Mangaluru was an ‘act of terror,’ Karnataka Director General of Police, Praveen Sood said on Sunday. In a tweet, the DGP said, “It’s confirmed now. The blast is not accidental but an ACT OF TERROR with intention to cause serious damage. Karnataka State Police is probing deep into it along with central agencies.” The blast occurred on Saturday evening inside an autorickshaw, near a police station, leaving the passenger and the driver injured. Both have been admitted to the hospital.

As many as 17 new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Maharashtra’s Thane district, taking its infection count to 7,47,235, a health official said on Sunday. With the addition of the latest cases on Saturday, there are currently 120 active COVID-19 cases in Thane, which comes under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, he said. The death toll in the district remained unchanged at 11,967. The recovery count has reached 7,35,899 he added.

Two men arrested in connection to threats against Jewish community in New York

New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officers identified the two men late on Friday night after being alerted to warrants for their arrests by the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force, the MTA said in a statement. Police seized a hunting knife, an illegal Glock 17 firearm and a 30-round magazine after investigating the individuals. The FBI/NYPD task force became aware of threats to the Jewish community on Friday night and “moved swiftly to gather information, identify those behind it and operationally neutralize their ability to do harm,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said in a statement, thanking “sharp-eyed” MTA officers for spotting the pair.

Allahabad HC suspends sentence for disqualified BJP MLA

The Allahabad High Court has suspended the sentence handed out to disqualified BJP MLA Vikram Saini in a 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots case and has listed the hearing for the suspension of his conviction for Monday. “The prayer for bail/suspension of sentence is allowed,” said Justice Samit Gopal. The High Court was hearing an appeal against the Additional District and Sessions Judge/Special Judge MP/MLA Court order which convicted Saini.

Moody’s closing its consulting business in China, laying off staff

The US-headquartered credit rating firm, Moody’s Corp is shutting it’s China consulting business and is laying off its staff. Two people with knowledge of the matter said that Moody’s Corp is laying off people associated with the unit in multiple locations across the country, reported The News International. Moody’s Corp started winding down the business, Moody’s Analytics, in China this week, the people said on condition of anonymity as they are not authorised to speak to media. First announced internally on Monday, the move has affected more than 100 employees across Moody’s Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen offices, one of the sources said, reported The News International.
