“I do four films a year. Yes, I do it. I do ads, sure. I work, not stealing from anyone. I don’t understand. People ask me why do you get up early? But, morning is for waking up, right. I don’t understand what I am doing wrong. I will work. I will give 50 days if required and 90 days if needed.”

There is a wave. Lot of people play and follow chess. Internet has made chess more accessible to everyone. Right now, chess has got in India good rise and the important thing is we have a golden generation. Gukesh’s peak rating has been 16 and he is still in the top 25. Arjun is 1-2 points behind. Nihal Sareen finished in the final of an online global event. Praggnanandhaa has beaten Magnus 5 times this year.

“I want to enjoy chess and play as much as I can. My goals are pretty much the same from the start. I want to become the best and hopefully some day I can become the world champion,” he says

“When I play agains a cheater, any strong or experienced player can just find out by the moves,” says Gukesh. “You know the opponent’s strength. They can make one or two very good moves but doing this consistently becomes suspicious. But I don’t have knowldge on the current scandal.”

“I don’t know if I am too naive or if I am too trusting,” says Anand. He feels that his first reaction was that Hans Nieman had played well in that infamous game after which his opponent Magnus Carlsen accused him of cheating. “A lot of stuf will have to be done by experts,” he says about the investigation that is underway into the issue. “With computers, you cannot catch anyone at the time of the act. I keep an open mind but there are commissions now investigating the matter, but there is going to be no proof – Anand on cheating during online chess”

It depends on the opponent. Some are expressive. Magnus Carlsen shows some emotion but many maintain a poker face regardless of what is happening.  

Classical games was far superior 50 years ago. You were considered a world champion when you won in that format. Blitz was played casually. It was unlucky for me I dominated rapid chess and some blitz. But at the time there was official rating for rapid. Now in the last 10 years there are dozens of records being tallied up, I lived in the pre-record era. As people caught familiar with it, rapid chess caught up with classic pretty fast. There is still a gap. You should have an open mind with formats, play whichever he audience is willing to watch. If you produce a good quality game, great. Main thing is to show your skills.

Anand admits that players today have far more than what he had in the early years of his career but he does miss those days. He feels he wouldn’t change a thing because it is not like the current players have any real advantage as their competitors have the same facilities. 

“It was different from the current generation. The way they analysed the game – everything was very different. Learning from engines is great but I am curious to know how it would have been for me to play in Vishy sir’s generation”

“Anand sir was my role model and the reason I got into chess. I was super happy to be able to discuss chess with him regularly and the other coaches. Guys like Guyavsky were also there so I was just very excited. I can’t really explain how much I have learnt from all the classes,” Gukesh talking about joining Anand’s VACA.

RBI governor: “Even at this points of time, our reserves are very comfortable. The first objective of our market intervention in Forex market is to ensure an orderly movement of exchange rate. Second is to anchor market expectations. If the RBI doesn’t intervene, market takes it as rupee will just depreciate and RBI is indifferent and agnostic to it. That will fuel further depreciation.”

RBI governor: “Every innovation has to be well regulation when it is commmercialised or implemented as a financial intermediary.”

“There’s a reason why the inflation target has been kept at 4%.

Internal committee of RBI did a detailed analysis and found that 4% inflation target with a price band of +-2%. RBI research at that point of time found, and even now it holds good, that inflation for India would be detrimental to growth.”

The law requires that when for three consecutive quarters, if the inflation remains above 6%, it will treated as a failure of monetary policy and the RBI is required to write a letter to the government.

Agrawal says “$73 out of $100 goes into importing products” and the “world wants that India remains a market and not a manufacturer.”

Tendulkar: Looking at the ground dimension, I am going with England. Pakistan have the momentum but England will get to play square of the wicket. Adelaide had short square boundaries and longish straight boundaries. Up front, they will look to swing and later on they will go short, forcing them to play square. 

“I’ve never played scoop for six, or a reverse sweep for 6 over cover. Virat, Rohit, they don’t play such shots but are equally effective. The guy sitting beside me didn’t play all these but he had a great strike rate. Players practice all these shots. It is all about practicing. Once you know certain movements, hands become important even when the footwork is not there. I have seen during the IPL that players are practicing, not experimenting. To an outsider, you feel ‘why is he taking that risk’. But it’s practice.”

“I love all the shots they guys play. I wish I tries some before I retired. I thing the present day player has evolved in a way that it’s only beneficial for the game. People like to write about past players but these guys are good. They struggle a bit against Test but their concentration playing so many formats is incredible.”

I found out why he was so good at what he did. If he was standing at a put, he would still be threatening. He bowled a lot against sub-continent batsmen in his early Test career. But his breakout Test match was against West Indies in MCG where he picked up 7 wickets. From there, his star just rose to a level that was unbelievable for spinners. He killed the concept that Clive Lloyd that you need to have 4 fast bowlers to win a Test. He was extraordinary alongwith Murali. We played against the two best spinners.

In 2000, I had invited Warnie over for a nice meal. I asked him ‘Are you ok with Indian food, spicy food?’. He said ‘I avoid spicy food’ so I told my chef. I also invited my manager. We are sitting at the table, I am serving everyone. I saw Warnie eating a little, looking here and there so when I asked him if all is ok. He said ‘Yeah’. Then I saw my manager is nudging Warne. He said it was too spicy, and I can’t tell Sachin. I had only heard about Warnie’s baked beans and all that and he was into stuff like sausages and pizzas. So we ordered pizza for him. That is what he was into but he didn’t want to upset me. He was not too comfortable with spicy food.

Lara: Fortunately that never happened to me. I always felt that the bowler had a 78 percent chance of getting me out and it was about survival. Later on I would be able to dominate the opposition and that is when I felt, not invincible, but in control.

Tendulkar: There have been times when you feel nothing can go wrong. There is a thin line between confident and overconfident. There were occasions that you go out and play rash shots. I felt I can go out and play big shots. Sometimes you look at bowlers and know where they are going to bowl. Sometimes they come through and you’re walking back cussing yourself. 

“Brian has always had hunger, consistency, flair… that huge kit bag, even that would not be enough. Out of the conversations I had with him in the 1990’s one point I picked from him was pacing his innings. When you play big innings, there will be patches where you need to accelerate. I thought that ability to score big runs was incredible. If somebody has got a 400 in Test cricket, do I need to say more?” says Tendulkar on Lara. 

“It wasn’t decided to not hit a cover drive. My brother had sort of challenged me. He said ‘bowlers are not getting you out. The weakness is your shot selection.’ That’s when I said ‘in this Test match, I am not getting out. Not for 5 days. Australians were trying to get my out and bowl outside off. That’s when I decided that if you are going to challenge me, I am going to challenge you.”

The patience and fortitude he showed. Do doubt that he has a better technique that me from the beginning to end. If I was to score 200 without playing a cover drive, I would be smoking cigar after every innings that I batted.

“When we batted, and knocked the ball around, Imran Khan said to one of his fast bowlers, ‘Don’t worry about the line.’ Waqar bowled a ball to Sachin which he sent over the top of the keeper’s head for six. Waqar bowled short, and it was 6-7 blocks behind where the ball landed and that is where I realised that I am batting with a genius.

Lara: Pakistan had just won the World Cup in 1992. Imran Khan took the team to Canada, me and Sachin had found ourselves in he rest of the world team. It was the Sky Dome, astroturf. When Ambrose and Walsh started bowling, the ball was bouncing and it was a bit dangerous. The captains decided that bowlers can’t run more than 15 yards. We then had to walk out to face Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, all these guys.

Tendulkar: That is when Brian realised that there can be no friendly match against these guys. I think we scored around 330-340 something. We got into a brilliant partnership, Brian got a hundred, I scored 70-80 not out and we chased those runs in 30-40 overs. Brian realised that those lines don’t exist when they are bowling second.

I had something similar. I was 14 years old and there was this schoolboy’s tour to India. My father was given 20 barbecue tickets to raise money. Couple of weeks before the barbecue he had sold over 300 tickets. On the day I was leaving, I had my whole entourage with me. I visited India and it was an eye opener for me. That was the fun times.

“I was only 13. My first foreign trip. I had never worn a jacket. And now there was a tie, blazer, shoes. Everyone was at the airport to see me off. I was actually embarrassed. I had more family members than team-members.”

“He (Sir Viv Richards) called me, had a word with me for 40-45 minutes. Convincing me there is cricket left in me. Those things stay with you forever,” said Tendulkar. Brian Lara says that his first hero was Roy Fredericks, an opening batter like Lara was. “Sir Viv, the confidence he oozed was just amazing. My time with him was very short, he retired shortly after I started. I learnt a lot under him as the captain. I don’t think I had the same skill, he was very destructive. But I learnt about how to use confidence in battles against bowlers,” says Lara.

“When I met Sachin, he was already an established teenager. I was playing a lot of ODI by then. Sachin said I was very small, fragile. I had the opportunity to hone my skills in one-dayers. My first impression of Sachin was that I had never seen an Indian batsman so accomplished against fast bowling. Here was a teenager who scored runs against the best teams, bowling attacks in the world. From that day, I measured myself against Sachin,” says Lara.

“The first time I met him was in 1990 in Toronto. I had scored my first Test hundred at the time and just after that there was an exhibition West Indies vs Rest of the World in Toronto. I saw him the hotel lobby first and we connected immediately. Both of us are vertically challenged so that helped, I was not dealing with an Ambrose or a Walsh,” says Tendulkar

Both players have captained their respective international sides and are two of the greatest batters the game has ever seen. Tendulkar and Lara retired with astronomical numbers to their name. The Indian great scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests at an average of 53.78 and 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs at an average of 44.83. Lara, on the other hand scored 11,953 runs in 131 Tests at 52.88 and 10,405 runs in 299 ODIs at an average of 40.48. While Lara is the only batter to have scored 400 runs in a Test innings and over 500 runs in a single first class innings, Tendulkar is the only one to have scored 100 international centuries. CJI Chandrachud: “Infrastructural needs of judiciary needs to be answered. Some courts in our country have no toilet for women. Amid the stark realities facing judiciary our judges are doing a tremendous work”

“How do we define merit? We need to have a very hard look of how we conceive of merit and how we think of diversity. Why do we need women judges in the judiciary?”

Chief Justice Chandrachud: “The feeding pool which determines who enters judiciary is largely dependent on the structure of the legal profession, which is feudal, patrairachal and not been accomodating of women.”

CJI Chandrachud: “Across India, structure of legal profession is feudal. Need a democratized and merit based entry for women”

“During pandemic when we opened videoconferencing many women lawyers could appear. Live streaming allowing women lawyers to be productive”

CJI Chandrachud: “Sunlight is the best disinfectant. One of the greatest dangers to the institutions in a constitutional democracy is the danger of being opaque. When you open up your process, you generate a degree of accountability, transparency, and sense of responsiveness to the needs of citizens”

CJI Chandrachud : “We have tried to merge the e-court services with the Common Service Centres so that the services which we provide to citizens can reach out to every gram panchayat in India. Live Streaming of many HCs have begun. We need to live stream proceedings of district judiciary as it is the first interface for citizens”

CJI Chandrachud: “Technology has a huge potential to change our traditional ways of working as judges. Court buildings create an awe to the minds of litigants….that was mind of colonial design. Courts are instruments of nation state. Equally we are service providers to citizens”

We live in a country where access to the internet is not uniform. Our effort at using the video conferencing platforms really gave us a new insight what technology can do to tranform our legal system

“Real time reporting by judge is put out on Twitter or Telegram and instagram and you are constantly evaluated. If a judge keeps quiet it will have a dangerous effect on decision making. We need to refashion ourselves, recoup and rethink ourselves how we adapt to challenges of our age”

CJI Chandrachud: “Everything said by judge in course of a case hearing is not what is the final view. Two types of judges in court – one who plays the devil’s advocate and the other who tries to extend the argument to a logical conclusion. So there is a free flowing dialogue when a case is heard”

“Very often it’s not very easy to distinguish between what lies in the realm of policy and what lies in the realm of legality.

“Over 70 years we have bred a culture of indecision . This explains large litigation from government. There is a culture of distrust that makes our officers not to take decision, so one reason why Court has a backlog of cases. Justice Chandrachud: “The first challenge we face is the challenge of expectation. Almost every case comes into the lap, every social issue, every legal issue, and I dare say, a large number of political issues fall within the adjudicatory jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.”

Boris Johnson on immigration:”We should not let immigration be the problem. What matters with immigration is the public sense that it is controlled. Johnson: “We are a very ingenious bunch, and when it comes to energy I think we are gonna be able to get the price under control and bring it down with solutions that solves our economic problems but also political problems and dependency on Putin’s hydrocarbons.”

“We’re already starting to see effects of climate change. In July, temperature in London exceeded 40 degrees. That’s not normal for The british.. They cannot take decisions in that kind of heat which may even explain some of the curious political convulsions. Many things for which I blame global warming.. But who knows what future historians may decide.”

On vaccine, Boris Johnson says,”It was our two democracies that came together to distribute billions of doses of vaccines around the world. It was UK scientists who came up with Astrazenac, invented in Oxford and produced by Poonawalla’s Serum Institute in india.. It produced such enormous quantities that we used it in Ukraine and I am personally beneficiary of Astrazenaca and have not had Covid since.”

Johnson says, “One of the reasons we had a successful vaccine rollout was because we had an independent medical health research agency… We had the first approved vaccine in anybody’s arms anywhere in the world”.

Johnson says, “Given the tension we’re seeing across APAC region and obvious co-relation with what’s happening in Ukraine and Taiwan in South China Sea .. It is ever more vital that we two democracies work together for economic health and collective stability.
