Congress supported NPP, an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party to topple a Meghalaya tribal council led by the United Democratic Party (UDP). Pyniaid Sing Syiem, the two-time member of the district council (MDC) of the NPP, was on Tuesday unanimously elected as the new chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in Meghalaya.
UDP leader Titosstarwell Chyne lost the floor test on the first day of the Summer (Budget) session of the council on Monday and his Executive Committee collapsed after losing the no-confidence motion moved by NPP MDC Bajop Pyngrope.
Sangma, while reacting to the recent political development in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council said the political dynamics of the District Council is different from that of the state Government as he said the Government does not interfere in the working of the District Council.
When asked about the unhappiness of its alliance partner the UDP that it was not a smooth transition, Sangma said there are complications and challenges but at the same time he refuses to interfere. However, this proximity between Congress and NPP has left UDP, the alliance partner in MDA Government, unhappy.
Meghalaya Congress MLA and MDC of Nongstoiñ Constituency Gabriel Wahlang said that the Indian National Congress will only support the NPP in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and not in the NPP led MDA-II government in the State.Wahlang said his party is supporting the NPP in the District Council for the “welfare of our culture”.
