During a press conference in Mumbai on the Modi government’s ninth anniversary, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram expressed concern about the integrity and stability of Indian currency due to the introduction and subsequent withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 note. He referred to the introduction as thoughtless and foolish and the withdrawal as mortifying. In response, FM Nirmala Sitharaman defended the withdrawal, stating that the objective of remonetisation had been achieved and criticised Chidambaram for making ‘frivolous’ comment.
