Maharashtra opposition says BJP trying to polarise voters before polls; BJP denies charge

Mumbai: In the last few months, controversial suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh from Telangana has made several visits to the state and has given several provocative statements accusing the minority community of ‘love and land Jihad‘.

Raja Singh’s first speech was in Mumbai on January 29, following which he was booked by the Mumbai police. However, that has not deterred him, for he has given speeches later in Solapur and in Latur. The Mumbai rally where Raja Singh gave the speech was organised by the Sakal Hindu Samaj, an umbrella organisation of all Hindu outfits in the state. The Sakal Hindu Samaj itself has organised more than a dozen rallies all over the state with hundreds of their followers marching on the streets calling for a ban on religious conversion and ‘love jihad’ and seeking a Uniform Civil code.

BJP’s rivals claim the party is using the Sakal Hindu Samaj rallies and speakers like T Raja Singh to polarise voters ahead of upcoming polls.

“These people have been given the responsibility to spew venom, create divisions in society and cause polarisation for the BJP to benefit in the polls. It would be difficult for the BJP to take on the might of all the three parties on the issue of development, so they have started this,” said Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant.

A BJP leader on condition of anonymity said the party had nothing to do with T Raja Singh being brought to the state: “He has been suspended from the party. We are not involved in bringing him to the state.”

Shiv Sena under Eknath Shinde have also joined the Hindutva bandwagon. Sena MLA Sanjay Shirsat said this week that he would be writing to PM Modi to shift the tomb of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb to Hyderabad.
