Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on Friday cheered for ChatGPT, which he believes will change the world.

ChatGPT is an advanced AI chatbot trained by OpenAI which delivers strikingly human-like responses to user queries in a conversational manner. The chatbot answers follow-up questions, admits to errors, challenges incorrect premises and also rejects inappropriate commands, thanks to its dialogue format.

Rooting for ChatGPT, which has been keeping the Internet buzzing since its arrival, the 67-year-old said that the chatbot will make several office jobs more efficient.

“Until now, artificial intelligence could read and write, but could not understand the content. The new programs like ChatGPT will make many office jobs more efficient by helping to write invoices or letters. This will change our world,” Gates told German business daily Handelsblatt in an interview.

During the 2022 summer, Gates had met with Greg Brockman, OpenAI co-founder and president, to review some of the upcoming AI products.

OpenAI recently announced a multiyear, multibillion dollar partnership with Microsoft.Though Gates stepped down from the board of directors of Microsoft in 1975, he still spends 10 per cent of his time at the tech giant’s Washington headquarters, Redmond, according to Forbes. While we hear Gates openly and quite frequently talking about the future and goodness of AI, the philanthropist says his interest in AI goes back to his earliest days of learning about software.

“The idea of computers seeing, hearing and writing is the longterm quest of the entire industry. It’s always been super interesting to me. And so as these machine learning techniques started to work extremely well, particularly things for speech and image recognition I’ve been fascinated by how many more inventions we would need before [AI] is really intelligent, in the sense of passing tests and being able to write fluently,” Gates told Forbes in an interview.

Talking about OpenAI, Gates said that he is aware of their work better than others. “What OpenAI has done is very, very impressive, and they certainly lead in many aspects of [AI], which people are seeing through the broad availability of ChatGPT,” he added.

ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft, has been rated as the fastest-growing consumer app in history.
