Excited by his discovery of ChatGPT, the chief financial officer of Tata Consultancy Services couldn’t wait to share the news with his children. To his utter amazement, his younger child would calmly inform him that “‘I did my history homework taking help from that!”
The chatbot with an answer to every question and which nerdy kids have used before their parents, has crawled its way into the professional and personal lives of India Inc’s top executives. The generative AI bot developed by non-profit Open AI had crossed over 1 million users within five days of its launch in November.
It is also the common thread between a donation made in 2015 by Infosys to a poem that’s making the rounds of HCLTech employees’ internal WhatsApp groups.
Little surprise therefore that TCS CEO Rajesh Gopinathan would tell analysts and reporters at a recent meet that he was flummoxed by the lack of questions on the uber cool AI tool.
“I must say you are a matured and knowledgeable group for having resisted (in) asking about the impact of ChatGPT on our industry” he said jokingly calling out analysts and reporters for missing out on what is considered as the most defining technology trend of the future.

Infosys, which is actually an initial donor to OpenAI in 2015, has started integrating ChatGPT in some of its delivery solutions to up its productivity metrics and automation and calls the progress it has made as “huge”.“Several years ago, Infosys had supported this initiative in a very small way through a donation. We see the progress they have made is huge,” said Salil Parekh, MD and CEO of Infosys.
“We have examples where we are using ChatGPT in client situations and that is starting to further increase productivity and automation,” Parekh added during the company’s conference earlier this month.
Though senior IT managers say it is very early days to assess the chatbot’s impact on their company’s professional journeys. It has, however, certainly impacted their personal lives so far.
Asked to estimate the impact of ChatGPT on his company at a recent interaction with ET, HCL Tech’s CEO CK Vijayakumar replied with a stanza of memorized poetry.
“When technology is the need,
HCLTech is there to lead…
When outcomes matter and innovation is key,
Choose HCLTech your go to be!”
This, he said, is what ChatGPT had generated in response to a company question. The ditty he told ET reporters had gone viral on HCLTech’s internal WhatsApp groups.
Echoing the sentiment amongst his peers, Vijayakumar said it is “very early days” for the technology. But, it has the potential to disrupt the delivery models such as BPM work. “It is a very exciting technology and we are all very keenly following it,” he said.
The technology in which Microsoft has invested $10 billion is expected to give a tough fight to Google’s search dominance and disrupt several established technology businesses.
“From a programming perspective, if I request a small program like ‘say hello world’, it will definitely give me the code. It can also identify mistakes in a code. But I don’t think it can put complex algorithms for enterprises right now,” said TCS’s Seksaria,
The Bengaluru-based Infosys also said ChatGPT’s application is applied across multiple service lines and not only restricted to business process management (BPM) or chat assistance services.
The interest in the technology is so high that ChatGPT was the buzzword at the recently concluded Davos World Economic Forum with a lot of discussions centred on generative artificial intelligence (AI).
